Christmas in Scandinavia & Finland:
As Yuletide begins, many people attach ornamental Christmas wreaths to their front doors. They are not taken down until Twelfth Night, the sixth of January. Many such ornaments are handicraft works made of straw or twigs, which for hundreds of years were the most usual materials for Finnish Christmas decorations.
The Christmas tree is brought home on Christmas Eve at the latest and, in the case of families, it is usually decorated by the children of the house. Christmas trees used to be decorated with real candles but now they are normally electric. A star is placed at the top of the tree and the branches are adorned with sweets, elves, stars, and apples, the last-named relating to Adam and Eve. According to the Finnish calendar, Christmas Eve is the name day of Adam and Eve.

NOVICA, in association with National Geographic, offers thousands of limited edition and one-of-a-kind gifts, jewelry, and home decor treasures handmade by master artists and artisans throughout the world. Gilded by the light of sunset, exotic birds are depicted on a decorative plate. Hand-crafted by Mahender Kumawat, the piece is sculpted of fine Makrana marble. The lovely motifs are enhanced with 22k gold leaf, and the plate is displayed on a seesham wood stand. Please note that once carved, marble may progressively change its original hue from pristine white to ivory. Artisan Info: "Hello, my name is Mahender Kumawat and I was born and brought up in Jaipur, which is also known as the 'Pink City.' I wasn't able to complete my studies due to our family's financial situation. However, my three siblings and I had a lot of fun while growing up. Some of my fondest memories are about the games we'd play in the fields nearby. "I have been inclined to drawing and sketching from an early age. My father and uncle were professional artists and I derive great inspiration from them. I used to go to my uncle's place everyday after school so he could teach me. Then when I'd get home, I would practice under my father's watchful guidance. They taught me for more than four years, and when I left school I started painting fulltime, as a professional. My younger brother Dinesh also has a flair for painting, so we used to paint together. "Though I could not continue with my studies, I made sure
